The Role of Case Management in Substance Abuse Treatment

This unit will introduce you to the various roles played by the Counselor-Case Manager within the field of addictions. The goal of this unit is to teach you how to identify the ways screening for psychoactive substances is performed and how to evaluate commonly used assessment instruments to determine which instruments are sensitive to age, developmental level, culture, and gender. Further, this unit will cover how to evaluate a case history of a presenting client to include screening, assessment and treatment planning, aftercare and follow-up. It will provide information that will enable you to identify the current DSM diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders. By the end of this unit, you should be able to 

  • Identify the ways screening for psychoactive substances is performed.
  • Identify the current DSM diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders.
  • Evaluate commonly used assessment instruments.
  • Determine which instruments are sensitive to age, developmental level, culture, and gender.
  • Identify legal and ethical issues encountered in the client assessment process.
