Links to an external site.Below is Application to Practice, the third 'building block' of the TAP 21 Transdisciplinary Foundations.  Each building block adds to our list of proficiencies, skills, and knowledge needed to become a Professional Chemical Dependency Counselor. 

This section of Unit 2 will review the essentials of Motivational Interviewing, the Stages of Change, Treatment Demographics, and the Principles of Effective Treatment.

APPLICATION TO PRACTICE

Understand the established diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders and describe treatment modalities and placement criteria within the continuum of care.

  1. Describe a variety of helping strategies for reducing the negative effects of substance use, abuse, and dependence.
  2. Tailor helping strategies and treatment modalities to the client’s stage of dependence, change, or recovery.
  3. Provide treatment services appropriate to the personal and cultural identity and language of the client.
  4. Adapt practice to the range of treatment settings and modalities.
  5. Be familiar with medical and pharmacological resources in the treatment of substance use disorders. 
  6. Understand the variety of insurance and health maintenance options available and the importance of helping clients access those benefits.
  7. Recognize that crisis may indicate an underlying substance use disorder and may be a window of opportunity for change.
  8. Understand the need for and the use of methods for measuring treatment outcome.

The goal of this section of Unit 2 is to acquaint you with the many variables that come into play when matching clients to the proper treatment modalities and services. As you read through the list of professional counseling competencies above, how many do you feel competent doing right now?
